Was told at interview it's was 17.70 an hour just to get my first check and it only pays 7.25 a hour

Sorry to ask but is this $7.25 your gross or net pay? It’s a $10 an hour difference from what was agreed, but if this is your net take home, it might be accounting for taxes, benefits, uniform reimbursement etc.
Still, this sounds extreme being over 60% of your gross pay.

Review any papers you signed when you started and please calmly talk to HR—tell them you’re trying to understand how your paycheck is broken down.

What?! Do you have it in your contract the hourly rate?

Never received a contact

What was on your employment contract?

I was giving no write agreement

Have you talked ot HR? The only thing I can think is sometimes places have a lower rate for training and then when you are trained you get bumped up. I would definitely talk to someone about that.

That’s not even close to minimum wage!

My first assumption was the same as S1. It’s not uncommon for hourly jobs to have a lower pay rate during training, but that should have been discussed up front

Oh no… gotta find a new job. Thats not even a legal minimum wage, is it?

That’s the federal minimum wage in the US so yes, it’s perfectly legal unless they live in a state with a higher minimum wage.

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?
