This is such an important point. Healthcare workers are expected to care for everyone else, but many are conditioned to ignore their own pain, illness, exhaustion, and mental health just to keep the system moving.
Presenteeism is not dedication when it puts the worker, the team, and patients at risk. Someone working through a migraine, injury, fever, burnout, or unsafe level of fatigue is not being “strong” — they are being placed in a position where their health is treated as less important than staffing numbers.
From a healthcare ethics perspective, we cannot promote wellness for patients while normalizing self-neglect among staff. Safe care requires healthy caregivers, realistic staffing, supportive leadership, and a culture where calling out when truly needed is not treated like betrayal.
Healthcare workers are human beings, not disposable resources.
