IMO, receiving someone else's leftovers seems like more of an insult than not getting anything at all.

I agree, sometimes it is very obviously picked at and it’s hard to know how long it has been sitting out.
Been there.
Because the highest paid people control the budgets.

This part.
It’s because the highest paid people are all in cahoots together. They’ve mastered how to skim what they can for “business related expenses” and coding all that in as business lunches reducing their taxable business income, and those of us on the bottom putting in the grunt work will get nothing. If they bought the rest of us things on a regular basis, it’s money out of their bonuses and extras. It’s a slap in the face and my old company did the same. I was an OR circulator and was told many times they couldn’t afford to offer me FT or benefits because the company was “struggling” yet they’d call me in the OR daily and tell me to play waitress and get the lunch orders for the elite people in the OR (surgeons, PAs, and anesthesia) and then the CEO, managers, and other “important people” were included too. The rest would get nothing. Yep, couldn’t afford to compensate me appropriately, but had the ability to buy about $300-$500 daily in lunches. That amount would certainly cover my salary! When companies pull this crap, it’s time to leave because it’s extremely toxic! If they can’t see they’re playing a tier system on who’s worthy then they truly don’t value the entire team, and never will.
Thats so true, that's a sad reality. I never thought about this way! When we get left pastries from morning meetings im quite happy, but your perspective will change how I see it now

Don’t get me wrong, I love a free pastry as much as the next person but still…
