This depends on a lot of factors, a big one being age. There are definitely other options you can try before IVF that are generally cheaper and less invasive, but just know that they also have lower success rates. We did a few months of clomid and then a couple months of trying naturally after the HSG test (sometimes flushing out the tubes can help with conception). After that we went straight to IVF because of my age and the higher success rates. But it also sounds like you haven’t been through the standard tests yet so I’d try to pause and see if the results let your doctor give you a more targeted recommendation.
If you have specific hangups on IVF, it might help to talk to others (here or elsewhere) that have gone through it to better understand the process.

You do not need to go straight to ivf. There are lower grade treatments you can try such as IUI
We spent a few months on diagnostics, mostly trying to get my uterine lining thicker because very light periods were the only obviously “off” thing. Towards the end we did a dna fragmentation test on my husbands sperm, even though an initial standard test found it was fine. The DNA fragmentation results were terrible and that doctor told us IVF would be necessary unless we could improve them. We found a varicocele which we ultimately didn’t fix and also a bacterial infection which we fixed with antibiotics and then did IVF.
Our process was driven by (1) my impatience, and the absolute misery I lived in while waiting to start our family, and (2) my husband was in less of a hurry than me, and wasn’t keen to throw the kitchen sink at improving his sperm quality. IVF was our surest, quickest route to a live birth, and it was also the most within my (as the woman) control.
May I ask what happened with your uterine lining (if anything)? I’ve also been experiencing a very thin lining and exceptionally light periods, and it’s something I’ve been worried about.

I went straight to IVF because I already had a good amount of embryos frozen and based on all the tests that seemed like the best option. The transition can be weird because it’s such a different approach to conception than what a lot of people expect- it becomes a very dry and scientific medical process. I’d ask your doctor a lot of questions about different approaches and tests you can do to figure out the right path. And maybe look up other groups like this one where you can talk to people who went through IVF.
Honestly, to keep my peace - I simply trusted my doctor and just showed up for appointments and did what I was instructed to do in between them.
We knew IVF was our only option (genetic issues) so there wasn’t a lot of back and forth to decide the path forward.
My doctor gave me the choice for protocol for FET and that drove me crazy!
