“What interests you in working at Vayner?”
Don’t talk about the work but show you the agency bar.
Allow me to share my list with you. Some are counterintuitive, but these have proven to be red flags for me over the years as a freelancer:
- Over-the-top flattery from the recruiter. (Creepy, and what are they making up for?)
- When the team + recruiter constantly references the CCO by first-name only, as if you should definitely know who *he* is. (Nine out of ten times this will land you at one of those agencies where everyone is forced into playing along with the ego charades of one guy, and their jobs revolve around chasing his approval.)
- If anyone i interview with shows up to the zoom call burnt out, beat down, over tired or drained of energy and enthusiasm.
- If they ask me to lower my rate. I have some wiggle room in my rate, but going much lower always seems to land me in a bad environment.
- If they can’t/won’t give you a timeline, or details about the deliverables on the project. This tends to mean they’re going to want everything ASAP, and then some helping hands on additional projects. I reserve the right to a workable schedule.
What are your red flags?
