I would ask these questions typically for my own edification to see if the company is a good fit for me and whether or not they can provide me the tools to be successful at my job:
- What is the resourcing process like?
- (If Digital) Do you have a QA department?
- How often do PMs communicate with clients?
- What Project Management tools do you use?
- What is the PM dept structure like? Do you role into account, operations? (I find that PM depts that fall under the account team are just glorified assistants.)
- Can I provide more value other than just timelines and process? Can I have a voice in the strategy and creative?
Based on my needs (and levels of self-respect in some aspects), the answers to these questions gives me a sense if I will be successful at this company. Good luck.
I wish I'd asked about QA in past interviews. Seems like a small thing but their answer to this says a lot about how a place functions.
Sr. PM1 had some great ones above! I’ve been interviewing lately so I’ll add some additional questions you could consider (some are similar/along a similar vein but may get you different info 🙂):
- what does the typical PM career path look like here? Are there multiple career paths?
- who leads the PM department? (Look them up on LinkedIn and see what their career has been like)
- What’s the average tenure look like for PMs here, is there a lot of turnover?
- What characteristics do you find consistent in successful PMs you’ve worked alongside with at this organization?
- Who is in charge of managing your PM tool(s) in terms of hygiene, adoption, improvements, etc? (I’ve found that if an org doesn’t care what PMs think or have to say about the tools they’re using, they don’t really find the function valuable)
Great suggestions, but the question about turnover is the real #1.
I would ask about the history of the AM/PM roles at the agency in the context of how that came to be versus the more generic (and traditional not that long ago) umbrella account service structure. A discussion around that will tell you how much PMs are valued if the split is recent may tell you there could still be some confusion over roles. Or may be a well-oiled machine.
Be sure to ask about how Account Management is handled and the relationship between PM and AM. Can be highly disfunctional at agencies. Also ask if there's a PM community of practice (ex regular domain meetings).
