Katy always seems to do well
Horn elementary is top notch.
The best ones are River Oaks and West University. Because they serve the richest families in town.
Makes sense! Saw them at the top of the list on US news.
Biggest indicator of high performing K12 schools is the level of involvement (both time and money) of the PTO.
The curriculum is essentially the same up until grades 10-12.
Txschools.gov 👍
I know quite a bit about education policy so I hate providing the recommendation but look for areas with A rated Elementary and Middle Schools and filter out areas where the Highschool doesn't offer AP Calculus + at least 6 other AP subjects.

WM1 that’s great to know. Thanks for sharijg
I’m out in Katy now, however for my kiddo’s elementary time, I also considered him as his individual self. He plays 4 instruments since 3, so finding a school that has an appreciation for teaching the arts was big for me because I’d know that he was surrounded with students with similar interests and he not feel out of place or “weird.” That’s always one of my suggestions, try to consider the personality of your kiddo, when considering the environment/school you choose, not just the school rankings.
Rambling is good when someone is trying to learn as much as possible! Thanks lol
He’s currently pk3 doing great. I’m not sure how well he’ll test in order to labeled as gt or vanguard. Both his parents are pretty “smart” individuals/ did well in school. I should do some research on what they’re actually tested on. My kid has a VERY short attention span - partially expected for a 3 year old. But he’s definitely more active than his classmates. More advanced as well. He asks more like a 6 year old because of the kids he’s been around thus far and having to grow up with a parent in law school.
I haven’t bought a home yet. I’m trying to move into a zone with good schools, but the price of houses in good zones are astronomically high. 😭
If he could win the lottery and/or be tested into gt, that would help all my worries.
Get your kid into the Gifted and Talented program and it won’t matter which school or district.
Thank you for that perspective!!!! I’ve heard of kids so far on the autistic spectrum testing into the program, but that doesn’t surprise me much. Great to hear an ADHD kid tested well. My kid is borderline ADHD, but I don’t want to falsely label him. (His dad has ADHD and it shows at 33 years old, so I wouldn’t be surprised.)
Spring branch also has some highly rated elementary schools (rummle creek, wilchester) as well. Not as rich but still some wealth so more reasonable homes with good schools.
We went with sbisd for a lot of reasons. I like the rummel creek > memorial middle > Stratford path. I know some people are very partial to memorial high school but it’s a little too rich for my liking
Depends on if you are in the city or the suburbs of Houston. I’m in Katy but Lamar CISD and our school has been fantastic. We are new here about a year from out of state.
A lot of good teachers are leaving Katy ISD for Lamar CISD. Glad to hear it’s working out.
I am surprised no one has mentioned TH Rogers yet.
Get your school of choice app in immediately if you’re not zoned!!!! Phase 1 ends February 2.
In HISD: West U, River Oaks, Twain, Roberts, Kolter, Harvard
I used to work in Katy ISD. The district is very hit or miss, and teacher morale as of late is terrible. Do your research on which school you’re zoned too because they are not created equal.
Fwiw, if you want suburbs, The Woodlands is the best by far but it's significantly more expensive than the rest of Houston metro.

Anyone have thoughts on Briargrove elementary? We just moved to the area
Good school, get into the international baccalaureate program.
For that area, you should consider Mandarin Immersion or ThRogers. The zoned schools are just not on the same level in all aspects.
New Territory, Walker Station, BBE - both zoned to Sartartia Middle School
Are you only interested in public? There are many many good private schools in the area. You could buy a house in a less desirable school zone (but still a good neighborhood - think Heights, Oak Forest zoned to Durham, Montrose etc).
Independence Heights will take a long time to turn bc of the schools. You can get something really nice for $1.2-1.3 in garden oaks, and then do private school, rather than pay $2m for a house. No school in HISD will be what you’re wanting. For $2m and public school you should be looking in SBISD (Memorial, south of I-10).
We live in Richmond, TX and our kids are zoned to LCISD. Love it here
