It’s important to understand that FAANG are highly competitive and merit based companies. You chose to work in consulting, which is great. There’s a lot of fluff on the internet about how you can step up a few levels from MBB to other companies. This does not apply to FAANG or really most legitimate tech companies. Digital transformation/emerging tech? That’s a buzzword for consultants. These companies define what’s even possible. They are literally creating the emerging tech before it’s even on your radar Tech strategy? You mean moving from some soon to be obsolete stack from the 80s to something from the 00s? This works at big clunky companies but not at tech companies Op model design/cost optimization? Maybe there’s something here for you to add. But if it’s the classic “consolidation and layoffs” strategy then good luck selling that to them Sorry to be a downer but tech is one of the few industries that are “legit” and won’t take too kindly to MBAs telling them which way is up, because they wrote the book on growth. Confidence is great, but recognize where your skills are
Banger from start to finish. Some solid advice here.
I worked at google for two years, in their engineering group. Not all functions are equal. Being in engineering means you are in the god tower, everyone else is there to serve and support you. Most those “other” functions get filled by consultants or prof services from other tech companies. They are really not revenue generators and def a 2nd class citizen compared to Engineering. Finally in these tech companies ... you will never see a non-tech lead a tech group.
+1 to this comment. The only caveat I would add is that if you join at a lower level like L4/L5, there are opportunities to switch to the Product Management ladder and end up leading a revenue generating team. This will not be possible at the VP level
there is not much scope and growth for a non technical person in FAANG..all the top ppl in FAANG are techie themselves(ibm ceo, microsoft, google ceo)..you might be able to get in to some product owner or management roles but thats it... it will have very limited growth and those positions are first layer to get axed.
I doubt anyone will lateral to VP in FAANG from MBB without being a partner first. And if so, you would probably know what roles you would go to.
What skills would you have to move to a tech leadership role at FAANG?
Lol
Also define a tech leadership role
Of what? Engineering? Product?
