Only way I did it was by getting another freelance gig that offered more money. Leveraged it as reason to go full time.

Be passionate and smart. Sorry, but you’re right about scopes not being done until the last minute. The minute the scope is signed it becomes a race to hire. The most memorable interns and freelances will be the first ones called. How to be memorable? Be passionate and smart. And being fun to work with never hurts.
Get on your CD’s good side. And do kick ass work.
Always do your best
If you can, get on projects that will continue past when your internship ends/ there’s a good chance they’ll ask you to stay on and finish up - during which time you get on some more projects, and so on, until they just decide it’s easier to keep you on.
