Someone who is truly interested in your success. If you’re not sure if your current mentor is or isn’t, he/she is probably not.
I finally have a mentor that cares, and it took me over a decade and 5-6 mentors to get here. The ones before could fit into two categories: 1) people interested in checking a box that says they have a mentee. So they take you to coffee quarterly and have a conversation with you about life. Fun times.2) less common (hopefully) are those that are interested in your growth only if they can milk it for their benefit. Usually the same type that is paranoid and scared of people smarter than they are.

Someone who is willing to help you during the rough times, not only the good times. Sorta like fair weather friends, it's very easy to be a mentor to a rockstar and have it look good on you. But the ones who stick by you when shit goes down and help you recover? Priceless.
Also true of work friends - there was a question a while back on how do you know who to trust at work /can you have real friendships with coworkers. Yes to the ones who stick by you through thick and thin.
