It depends. Hope that helps!
As long as you aren’t about to replace General Kelly i think it has potential
I was thinking that even if you are a chief of staff for a senior / c-suite executive, what is the next step after it. Senior position in industry typically require you to have managed a large P&L before. Chief of staff role would give you a great strategic view of a company, but I am not sure it sets you up for the next big thing. Please tell me why I am wrong.
Thanks D1! That is the correct answer for most of life's questions.
Great opportunity usually. Increases your awareness of high level decision making processes in the industry. Expands network dramatically. Lots of good opportunities to follow a CoS role. The downsides are obvious- lots of work, somewhat thankless, and often very administrative and boring.
Sounds like it’s worth having a conversation with whoever is recruiting you about how long they expect you to stay in that role and what the path looks like from there
I left consulting for a CoS role. While interviewing we discussed that it would not be administrative in nature and specifically covered three potential follow on roles if my performance was great. I'm only 6 months in but my manager has kept his word.
In terms of visibility, it has been incredible. Frequently in front of the COO and his directs.
Point is. It can be great but you must do your due diligence while interviewing.
Thanks all. I definitely think it would get me even more into an executive mindset, but I would be back to an individual contributor. Just starting to explore the opportunity.
@A1 which industry and size of firm did you land at?
Cyber security. I'd rather not say company size
@A1 - Who are you a CoS to? COO? Or someone in his team?
