I was a senior editor at a post house. Budgets were shrinking, commission was shrinking, there wasn’t enough work. Now I’m happily freelance. I’ve been staying busy and doing good work.
Are you still getting broadcast spots as a freelancer? Do you get that work from relationships with directors or are you being brought into agencies internal departments by producers you’ve worked with?
Yes I’ve still done broadcast spots, mixed in with web content. Some of my web stuff is actually cooler/ better for my reel anyway in my opinion. How I get my work is a huge mix, from past relationships and also from new people finding me. I work sometimes in-house at agencies and sometimes at production cos and/ or vfx houses. My work really hasn’t suffered since going freelance, if anything I’ve luckily been able to do a lot of great work
I used to complain when I got asked to do a simple ae animation. Now I see job posts asking for editors who can color, mograph, composite, and do complex cinema 4d animations. The future of editing may not be editing, it may be being trying to edit while doing everything else.
Meaning has the in-house edit role become filled with so many talented editors that it’s looked at with respect rather than the agency creatives being forced to edit in-house ?
To add, I don’t see a big future for those posthouses. Their overhead is too high. I don’t think they’ll all go out of business but I think more and more will close their doors in the next several years.
@editor 1 - do you feel less respected when working in house ? Or is that a myth -
