What is the federal parental leave policy? I’m new to government and having a baby soon. I know we’re given 12 weeks and have to sign an agreement to work 12 weeks after we return but are there other stipulations to a claw back period or how long we had to be at the agency first?

You need to be a non-temp employee for 12 months, but that's it. There are clawback provisions in the 12 week return paperwork.

Your agency will have info in PPL, here's an example from DOI: https://www.doi.gov/sites/doi.gov/files/paid-parental-leave-faq-9-22-20-508-compliant.pdf

I’ll only have been a fed for 3 months when I need to use the leave. Thanks for the document! It’s very helpful

If parental leave is important to you, consider jumping to industry. My company gives 18 weeks fully paid leave as a Day 1 benefit and no clawback period.

VMware.

Curious what other people's parental leave looks like for companies of a similar size and industry. We are about 150 employees in the CPG (beverage) space. We want to improve/expand our paid leave. How much paid time do you give your employees? Do you give the same amount for the primary and secondary caregiver? Please include your company size and industry.

I work with several people with kids and I have noticed quite often that they completely disregard any issues of people with no kids and try to one up work life imbalance conversations with stories of them being parents. It must be hard being a parent but I don’t think people at work should be treated differently or given any additional consideration just because they have a kid. You already get parental leave so If I’m expected to work 12hr I ask the same to be expected from my peers with kids.

My dad passed away 10 years ago.He was a “good”dad while alive (not the best husband). I spent lot of my youth/adult life fixing his mistakes after he died, which weren’t mine to fix. While I have tried to forgive him for myself, the relationship with his memory is complicated. Our family friends (husband and wife) who really were there for us in every sense after his death came to visit. That “uncle” is the closest thing to a father that I have. Today, I really wished he had been my father.
