I agree with both ACD1 and D1 - with a company that is solid financially you will likely get anywhere between 1 and 5% increase annually. And 3-4 years in a role is generally about the expected time to grow into and then beyond the role. That timeframe can grow longer as you climb higher up the ranks just because there are fewer of the senior/executive roles available than there are individual contributor roles.
If you’re asking for a promotion I strongly recommend talking with your manager well before the ask to let them know you’re interested and to ask for their help in earning it. You can talk with them about stretch assignments and taking on tasking to learn and demonstrate your readiness for the role. For my promotion to VP I talked with my manager almost two years before the promotion about wanting to get there and wanting his help. He specifically looked for stretch tasking for me and opportunities that could prove out my chops. Then when he actually put me in for the promotion it was more of a rubber stamp because we had ample documentation to demonstrate why the request made sense.
If you are certain you are underpaid you can ask for a market assessment. Just be sure you’re underpaid if you do that because if you’re overpaid the assessment can bite you in the butt.
If you are performing, then you should expect incremental raises each year, in the good days is was about 3-5% increase on your base, these days it seems to be more like 1-3% increase.
When it comes to a raise or consideration for promotion I figure in time in role and business impact. Here I think you can make meaningful impact and start growing out of a role by year 3or4.
It’s always good to ask for a raise on the basis of how impactful the work you deliver affects the company bottom line.
Is this a project that brought customers in, made it easier to service customers through process or upsold services to existing customers. You can see where I’m going with this. It’s easy to tag your pay inline with the impact you are making and I don’t mean busy work.
If you are doing these things tag your success metrics and build your case for a pay rise which I’m sure you know how to do but for the sake of clarity understand your figures , do your research on similar roles internally and externally.
If your boss is getting praise or recognition from your work ask for a pay increase immediately . You want a salary increase at the point where you are most valuable when they need you most. Don’t wait for the pay rise cycle of reviews everyone is looking at getting a rise and so yours is less likely to be considered.
Build up your networking skills. Make sure you get a sponsor onside vehicle can help influence the necessary people behinds the scenes
Love this topic, and would love to hear what others have to say. I'll be honest, I align my request with the company's financial cycles. If we've had a particularly strong quarter or year, I'm more likely to broach the subject.
