I make sure to re-iterate my expectations. No bonus points/activities; no removing points. Just my demand that they respect anyone and everyone. That’s it. They know they must treat a sub really well or they will hear from me as a class and as individuals. I expect nothing less.
I have the same policy, basically. Group accountabilty is self-government is an important skill that shows maturity. I've forgone pop quizzes and assigned 'easy' homework as rewards, fun activities too, movie days. As 'punishment' I go the textbook (aka boring) route for a few lessons. It works.
Yes, it's the dreaded green book in my classroom...and they have to write the passages not type them.🤣
I give a high point assignment that is due at the end of the hour, turned in online, time stamped, no late work accepted.
The only people who are excused are people with excused absences.
The assignment isn't hard, doesn't require a lot of explanation but does take enough time that they can't get it done AND cause problems for a sub or even play around.
I love this idea. I like that it puts the responsibility on the students' shoulders, and it is worth points. So many students think that if work is completed with a substitute teacher, it is not graded. I always tell my students I am not wasting their time with assignments that are not worth points.
If a sub leaves a name due to an issue like disrespect, refusal to follow the sub’s instructions, etc., I refer the student to the office. Our AP doesn’t play.
If I know I’m going to be out, I let the kids know that one bad apple will spoil the barrel. I use peer pressure to an advantage. In 13 years, I’ve only had to prove that twice. I use an example of how their parents would respond if they had to pick you (a student) up from a sleepover because of bad behavior. What will your parents do? A bad sub report will be 10x worse.
I love it. Accountability...learn it sooner than later.
Basically the same but I hold individual students accountable not the whole class.
I like this idea, I ought to implement this idea.
