If you settle a case for under the reserve amount and/or settlement target, it boosts your metrics. The better your metrics are, the better raises/bonus you may get, in addition to promotion potential.
This is a pretty myopic view of life in general if you think individual adjusters are out to get you for their own bonus.
First you don’t have to have riches hanging over your head to want to hit your performance metrics (of any job). With insurance dockets I’m sure the adjuster has like 300+ files they absolutely do not care about your case at all. And they want to close files as much as possible (another metric) so I’m sure if your case is being dragged there’s a reason for it.
Second their tactics must work to some extent or else they wouldn’t be doing it. Insurance is a risk business and they track dollars and spend. If it was better to the business to pay out and not “drag things out” they would have done it by now.
Bonuses.
No insight into their pay structure but insurance is a business, they make more money (the company as a whole) when they can nickel and dime people for their injuries. Not everything should be a million dollar payout but as insurance defense counsel I understand why it’s a job.
I have actually worked on both sides of this so its an interesting question. They definitely want to settle for under the reserve amount and like the person above said it boosts metrircs. We didnt' get bonuses so it didn't effect that but it did effect our raises at the end of the year.
