Is it a realistic possibility to move from articling at a private firm in Windsor to an associate at Bay Street? I'm currently doing corporate commercial work.

I no longer know the market well, but I would assume Anything is possible right now. Firms are losing people like crazy

like

Thank you for your reply! I'm assuming they're probably not as picky about the experience they require as well, especially if it's a "minimum 1-3 years" experience position. Hopefully other people can chime in and provide some further insight

I would apply and network like crazy. You just need a toe hold in a lower tier firm and you can move up from there. The first step is the hardest.

Thank you! Are there any forms you would recommend?

3 years ago I would have said no, but today? Maybe. What kind of work are you doing specifically, and what year of call are you?

like

Okay, I'll take a look at them as well and other regional firms.

I would recommend getting a good recruiter as well. I made the move from articling to a 1st year position and found it was very beneficial.

Career dev advice needed. Being offered a promotion (would be reporting to my current skip and managing/growing a team). The role is global subsidiary management/governance. But the work does not appeal to me, I’ve been doing some of it and it’s so much admin and people management. I’m not practicing law at all. Love my current IC role and manager, get to work on strategic transactions and closer to the business. If my goal is head of corp legal one day, should I suck it up and go for it? Thnx!

Would it be hard to get a exp associate role in advisory at a B4 as someone with about 10 months in audit at EY, 7 months experience in corporate accounting at a F300 and CPA? Hated my time at the F300 but had thought the grass would be greener in industry. I’m starting a financial analyst position at a major hospital system in my area soon and want to stick with that for a couple years before making a transition but was curious if I just don’t have the right experience for a role in advisory.

I got an offer at Meta as a 3-mo contingent CSM that pays 2x what I make now.

Two pros: 1) Making the jump from a non-tech agency role to FAANG can be tough, so this is a great oppo in that aspect.
2) I'm living in SF on a non-tech salary, so the pay increase would be incredible.

It’s possible I could move into a similar role @ Meta once this expires, but to be safe, I'd need to start the job hunt again asap.

Thoughts on the pivot & how valuable a short-stint at Meta is for future job hunt?

I went to a T14 law school, got great grades and glowing recommendations, and wrote (what I thought was) a great writing sample. But I got rejected from all 70 federal clerkships I applied to. The only thing I can think of is: I took a non traditional route after law school and did a 2 year public interest fellowship in a niche field of administrative law. The rejection gave me a lot of self hatred. I still really want to clerk. Any advice? What is wrong with me? I feel like a failure.

Hi Sharks 🦈,

Need some suggestions: My current company is on a layoff spree and 2 rounds are already done and I can foresee another round coming very soon.

While I am trying to switch to other companies, I’m not able to reveal the real reason from my side for the job change, as if I say, it’s because of layoff fears than it’ll reduce my negotiation power.

What other reasons can I give as I’ve just completed 9 months here and it’s too soon for any other company to take me in.

The lack of Canadian Big Law gossip and rants are disappointing. Do you all actually like your jobs!?!?

Any word on bonuses?

I really wish the big law firms in Canada were as transparent about their pay and bonus scales as what we are seeing in the US. Does any Canadian firm share bonus scales??

Watching US salaries increase AGAIN and wondering why Canadian firms don’t have the same pressure to follow these raises. Is it the relatively small number of big firms? Is it that all the big firm managers work together to keep the market in line? Is it the lack of reporting in the Canadian legal press? I feel like we are all getting screwed.
