What system are people using to keep documents of things they worked at a law firm as a template sample or writing sample? Obviously the firm will catch you emailing these documents to yourself or saving it to a USB. Any suggestions?

I’ve heard that you can copy and paste the text of a word document into an email in your personal account like Gmail, save it as a draft without sending, and then open it on your personal computer and have a saved copy there. Not sure if that’ll work but it’s something I have heard. Not sure what firms could or would do to prevent that.

Some firms prevent access to personal email on the firm computer. I’ve printed things in the past but it’s a pain to get them back into an editable template

Genuinely curious how people do this. gmail is blocked on my comp as is Dropbox

You may be able to upload documents to Google Drive. Perhaps do this on a personal computer, like when working from home.

I was thinking of the scenario where you log on to Citrix through your personal computer.

I think you could also do this on a firm-provided computer when working on your personal WiFi at home. But please do some investigation of this approach to check when it’s detectable.

Best solution is to print the documents over time before giving notice, so it’s not flagged as unusual behavior. It’s helpful to have print-outs of all your writing samples.

Or just call it a wash and use the templates at the new workplace.

Print the docs and take home copies. Do it slowly, don’t print like 1000 pages at a time.

If it’s something you produced at the firm, it should be something filed or public, so not sure why this is an issue

He’s asking about forms that are not public. For instance, I’ve taken contract templates and the like when lateraling. These are definitely not public but very useful to keep after leaving a firm, but obviously the firm absolutely does not want those things misappropriated.

In 15 years I've never worked anywhere that flagged me for sending myself stuff.

I'll add, though, I always redacted anything I send myself in an abundance of caution.

Print it out and scan it with an AI scanner

Or just put it in a folder to take home with you

Whenever i have a big deadline, my body goes into a panic mode where my energy immediately goes to figuring out how I’ll get something done well and on time. Outwardly, I don’t seem stressed so no one notices but actually I usually feel like I have a cold: fatigue, headache, sore throat, sinus infection. When a task is done, i stop feeling like crap. It’s been like this since law school. Any tips on managing stress or moving towards doing good work without my body shutting down lol?

Any Atomic Habit readers here? I’m brainstorming identity-based habits for two things I want to change:

-I want to bill more hours, so my goal is to become the type of person who bills at least 8 a day

Neither of these feel that helpful. Any one have suggestions for other identity-based goals that get at these changes I want to make?

Im a third year and my current firm isn't bad and I'm pretty comfortable here. Im satisfied most of the time. There is one firm I've been keeping my eyes on because of its similarities to where I currently am (nice people, similar hours, culture).

Im a bit burned out now and I would love to take a long break. I'm hoping I can take a break (2 months) between the transition but is this a good reason to move though? Would you move in my situation? Im sure there will be a signing bonus.
