They have to be. It’s your civic duty to participate and legally the company must allow it.
Yep, your employer has no choice. If you get selected for a jury and you're out for a bit, thems the breaks.
Next time just throw the summons away, there’s no way of the court knowing that you got the mail or not
I just came here to day that I avoided jury duty in nyc for 15 years by moving regularly and ignoring them. Eventually they got me, but yeah. If you’re in a big metro area and move every few years it is super easy to put it off
There’s even a timesheet code for it
If they try to raise a fuss, you can literally get the judge to write you a letter. They love to slap down employers that try to meddle with “their” courtroom.
They don't have to be cool. It's the law. You need to do it. And remember, you might not be selected.
It’s the law, dawg
Happened to me, I served about 20 days spread out over a month. You can bring your computer and work in the hallways w a hotspot, there’s a lot of downtime. But also, it was kind of nice to have the excuse to have a break from work and I loved the experience - I genuinely highly recommend. But I would check the handbook - some places cap pay after a certain number of days like 15.
That surprised me a lot when I had jury duty in nyc because where I came from, phones weren’t allowed in courthouses. The federal court in nyc confiscates phones when you go thru security then you pick it up at the coat check on your way out the door.
Yeah there’s no choice in that for them
They have no choice. By law. I have someone on my team that was gone for over a month.
They don’t have a choice
Most times you’ll get sent home. Bring a good book and wear comfortable pants.
It’s the law, they need to be. Don’t worry about it, it’s the agencies job to figure out how to manage.
It’s illegal for them not to pay you the full time
Based on NYjuror.gov: "For the first 3 days of jury service, employers of more than 10 must pay the jury fee or the wage. EMPLOYER PAYS JURY FEE DAY 4 or MORE: Beginning on the 4th day of jury service, the State pays the jury fee to employees who are not paid at least the jury fee by their employers." I was only paid for 5 days. Some companies only pay for the first three days, some more, depends on their benefits.

What happens if you’re freelance?
That’s usually a solid enough example of “undue hardship” to get you out of it, since you can demonstrate that serving on the jury would lead to high loss of income.
