If you have the J/D - try googling exact phrases in quotes to see if you can find the original posting.
Yes it’s common. It’s so you can’t go straight to the company for the opening and sidestep the recruiter, which removes their cut of the hire.
Are you junior or entry level? Your title says intern so curious what you’re looking for.
For your very first job, in Chicago, you’re probably looking closer to $35-45k. $55k is likely too high unless you get lucky.
You start at the low end of the pay band so they can theoretically give you raises annually before promotion.
I got $40k in Milwaukee right out of school. I feel like $50k should be where Chicago is at.
Am a junior and I know other juniors in Chicago - we all get paid 50k. It’s not unreasonable to ask for that but you’re def not going to get anything above. I think most places offer in the range of 40-50k for juniors
The recruiters don’t disclose because they don’t want you going to directly to the agency. They want their commission. I always work with recruiters from agencies directly. I get way more work that way.
About the pay... every agency is trying to get away with paying you less right now. Their excuse is COVID. 40k is a little low for Chicago. If you really want the job see if they can do 43k. But please, know your worth. You need to feel comfortable, especially now.
The only thing you have to keep in mind right now -as long as you bookend your conversation with remaing Humble - remember that it’s also about salary bands now- we have to consider the fact that they may be capped at a certain number to make sure that there is a equality among salary- depending upon the level so if you could find some research and see what people are making in that firm you might be able to assess the value of their recommendation. You can go back and ask for more - if you don’t ask he definitely don’t get so it’s how you ask!
Only and I mean only if they are replacing a high level
They should trust you won't go to them. How else are you supposed to build a relationship. Although some companies do do this more often than not it should not be the norm unless it’s like a very corporate staffing company
