I’ve worked at two other consulting firms including another MBB firm and have found Mckinsey people to not only be the nicest on a daily basis but also most committed to my long term growth and development. I would definitely say leadership is less likely to baby you, which I don’t think should count as being nice but some folks might think that.
From an outside perspective, all of the McKinsey folks I’ve met—either on same client or in personal life—have been nothing but nice.
The hard way. We invest unimaginable amounts of time in partner reviews, with reviewers (who are from a different country usually) and committees delving deep into our activities and impact through interviews. It becomes pretty clear who did what and who contributed to what and whether they sustained those contributions over time.
Jesus, Mck2. I think my heart just melted.
In general people here are smart humble collaborative. That said they are human too. So we have our share of monstrous egos. But the culture here is that even those egos have had to learn how to play nice with others. Given we have no revenue credit there is less incentive to hoard clients or resources and more incentive to collaborate.
Very low on the asshole scale for the most part .
MCK2, how do you evaluate your SMs and Partners, if it’s not revenue managed?
I’ve had conversations with friends at other firms who say things like “I’ve made my revenue targets for the year, better push this engagement into next year to set me up”. This sort of conversation literally does not happen here.
Thank you. That is interesting. You must have some sort of financial targets?
EY1 - partners do not have financial targets as part of our reviews. That said, we’re not stupid. Over time we know the level of impact we need to achieve (in whatever path we are on). And we know what that means in terms of revenue. It’s just not our primary focus.
BC1. I’d rather be idealistic with a healthy dose of realism than a total cynic, no?
Not sure if people is the right word 😄
D or PwC competes to have most assh*les so won’t be tht bad for sure. :)
