What’s the magic number for a portable book of business that actually gets firms excited? I’ve been a non-equity partner for three years and I’m starting to realize that the path to full equity at my current firm is essentially blocked by the founding partners. I have a solid book of business (around $800k), but I’m not sure if that’s enough to jump to another firm as a full partner. I don’t want to lateral just to be stuck in another non-equity waiting room for five more years.

Upon passing, the partner told me they would hire an assistant for me since I now became an associate. I've been fortunate to be in a high-paying position in the Los Angeles area and I rarely see comparable positions posted. The comparable positions at my company are filled by one of the big executive search firms. Assuming that I'm okay with a salary of 70K and more, and that I really don't want to work at a law firm. Is it going to be difficult for me to return to law with two years of experience and one year working in a legal adjacent role.
