What’s the most important skill you wish someone had taught you before you started in restaurants? For me, it’s learning how to advocate for myself like asking for raises, speaking up when something’s off, not just putting my head down and grinding.

How to quit before you hit a breaking point. Loyalty means nothing if you’re drained. Stay ready to walk.

Similar to advocating for yourself, don’t let people walk all over you. If people are terrible to you and each other, get out. It’s assumed as normal food culture, but don’t fall for it. Decent places exist!

Don’t take every fire (figuratively) that happens as a 5 alarm problem. There are so many small issue that happen on a daily basis, that those who are able to just let the problems roll off their shoulders and just solve them, do better mentally. Worrying doesn’t solve the problem but action often does.

Being willing and able to stick up for myself. I took way too much crap from everyone when I first started out because I didn't want to be the squeaky wheel. Now that I'm older and more experienced, I have no problem pushing back against bad bosses and rude coworkers. I'm too old to put up with this nonsense at work. Treat me respectfully or find my replacement.

Are exclusive social clubs in DC worth the money? I just realized how expensive it is after going through the whole application process ($4k initiation fee and $3.5k annual membership fee). Initially I was interested because I wanted to meet new people and make friends but not sure if it’s worth that much money. Does Equinox or any other clubs offer any similar social events?

Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.

So I work as an assistant manager at a restaurant for the past 9 months. I've worked in restaurants for the past 6 years science I was 16. Now I'm 22. I went to a trade school for media and film. I got a dream opportunity to work in the field making about the same or 10% more. I told myself the only reason I'd leave this company is for this type of job. Should I take the chance at this job and leave the restaurant that is on the rise and growing?

I work as an AGM in a busy restaurant. Been working there for just over a year, and haven't had a single raise. I now only make 0.50 cents more than even the lowest paid shift lead but I am doing a lot more work. I'm no longer satisfied with these conditions. Should I try to negotiate a raise or look for other opportunities?

If I should negotiate, any tips?
