I was arguing with another man and after exchanging several curse words, he ended it by calling me “chubby” and walked away.
Where are you from….. originally (in a bad way)

Yeah that’s a tricky one. On one hand, it’s a lazy conversation starter. You can be at a bar and approach the whitest of all white girl and the first words that may come out of your mouth are “so where are you from?” It’s one of the oldest ice breakers. Obviously, when directed at a POC it takes on a different meaning but you can’t assume ill intent. Often the question is asked to find a way to relate to the person you’re taking to with a shared experience, either because you’ve been where you suspect they trace their origins to or you’re genuinely interested in their culture or journey. I’m an immigrant (first generation but not POC) and I genuinely feel a kinship with people who are not “from” here and am always curious about their journey. Legitimately. Yet I haven’t asked that question in many, many years because of some of the comments expressed on here and the last thing I want to do is clumsily offend someone. Having said that I think it’s a bit strange that you would automatically assume that the question is related to only skin color. The answer may be Toledo Ohio or San Francisco California. What is offensive I think is when you get that answer to then double down and say “no but where are you from from?” THAT’s messed up. Be kind to each other’s. Like someone said above, we’re stronger when we build bridges.
Edit: I re-read the post and the “originally” part is messed up.

If someone steps up to me in the streets I respond with:
“sorry mate, I ain’t got no change to give”
Subtle implication and by the time they get it I’m gone.
