Our next car will be ab X5 PHEV. Not ready for full eclectic.
EVs are the future and you can think of PHEVs / EREVs as bandaids until we have a combo of the required infrastructure and long range vehicle tech to support charging needs. Product plans for most EV-forward OEMs have shifted to reflect the drop in EV demand for now, but are continuing to invest in EV R&D. Biggest Q is if any OEM can hope to stay afloat once Chinese EVs enter the market …
Call me old fashioned but I like the sound of an engine. I think EVs can be daily cars to commute and/or to drive around town where you can charge your car at home every evening.
Pro
I have one, a Kia EV9.
I like it, though I think EVs should just be an option like ICE and HEV are today.
For EVs to be successful, though, they need a massive buildout of the charging infrastructure, otherwise they'll be relegated to urban use cases and be useless to those who either aren't in an urban center or can't charge at home.
I had a PHEV for about three years before getting the EV9 this year, so I had an extended trial run to see if an electrified vehicle would work for me. No complaints on my end.
I can count on 1 hand the number of times annually that I drive more than 250 miles without stopping. Even a 500 mile trip is NBD because I’m going to stop for lunch anyways. I get free charging at work, so in the past 12 months I’ve spent between $100-$200 on “fuel.” That coupled with free carpooling, my EV has been a no brainer.
But a longer multi-day trip I wouldn’t take my EV, I’d rent something. But even before I got an EV, if I had a long road trip I’d rent a car and let Hertz eat all the wear and tear
It was a dumb waste of everyone’s time, just to be more pollutant than gas power. And then they tell you not to charge your car bc the grid can’t handle it. It was a big scam like most other things stemming from the fearmongering of climate change. Tesla was a fun experiment but those cars last 6 months before they turn into garbage. Not to mention, nobody can afford a house, and thus don’t have a place to charge one. And then you have to wait hours to fill up your car, plenty of owners regret their decision. Efficient ICE or hydrogen is the real future
Sooooo edgy.
I fail to see how EVs can be the future! If every vehicle was to convert to EV, I don’t know if there is enough raw material to produce them. What about battery disposal ? Not even talking about charging time, battery range or even the fact that ICE is a lot more fun to drive than EV (but that’s a personal choice)!
Like other comments said I'm old school and love the sound of a motor but here's a fact that a lot of people don't consider on those cars it takes roughly 50,000 gallons of water to put it out if it catches fire and that's if it stays extinguished and that is coming from a firefighter
Don’t hate them, but probably won’t buy a pure EV either. I would do a hybrid though.
I almost bought a BMW i4. Great car. But, I went with another ICE. Great deals out there now.
Nah. I like how it looks and is fun to drive.
I certainly don’t have an issue with electric cars. But I’d need my own charging station. To me, the infrastructure isn’t there yet, and I like sports cars, so maybe when my next lease is up I’d think about it. But I haven’t seen an electric car I actually like, from an aesthetic point of view. As much respect as I have for Elon Musk, Teslas, in my view, are hideous.
Yes, but do they make a cabriolet? After deciding to spend most of my time at my house in FL as opposed to the place New England, I got rid of my suv and settled on a convertible.
Don’t have any EVs or hybrids yet, not really my thing. Actually haven’t owned a single one. I’ve had probably 30 cars in my adult life
When all cars are hybrids, that might be when I get a hybrid daily driver. As it is, I drive barely 6k miles a year in my daily.
One of my wife’s dad’s friends had his brand new hybrid Volvo explode with his granddaughter in the car. He received 60% burns getting the kid out and he is quite an old guy already. She was fine at least but as much as we might hope hybrid is the answer over pure EV I’m not sure either is the right answer.
Wow, that’s crazy!

I have a Tesla. I would get a hybrid over EV any day
I'm on my first electric car (2024 Polestar 2) and I think it's a pretty great car for our use case. To me EVs are great and make sense if:
1. You have a home or easy access to a charger
2. It is not your only vehicle or you plan to rent for long trips
3. You can buy/lease for a good price compared to ICE.
For us we use it as our around town car, but if we drive any distance we take our XC90. If you try to do fast recharging through someone like electrify america the speeds can be quick, but the price ends up being comperable to petrol. For around town though I don't think I would go back to an ICE. Not to mention through Costco I was able to lease mine for $400 a month $0 down.
For those that are enthusiasts and say it isn't as fun I think there is a point. The acceleration from my car is absolutely stunning and it handles pretty nicely. But the lack of noise and shifts limits the engagement, and they can be quick enough you can't really use them on the road other than for quick bursts. I have an Ariel Atom for track/fun use and to me I can't think of a better 3 car garage.
I have a Tesla Model S, and eight other gasoline vehicles. The Tesla is easily the best driving experience (smooth, fast, near silent, superb software) and easily the best ownership experience (no routine maintenance, OTA software improvements, charge at home so I always leave home with a full “tank”.
Electric is the future. I’ll keep my classics, but when the cost comes down, I’ll convert them to electric.
