Let’s say the salary range is $A to G. You can always ask what differentiates a candidate who you would offer $A to who you would offer $G. I have always talked about my impactful work and aimed for pay that is market appropriate. It may also fall outside a company’s posted salary range. But, if they see you as a great candidate, they will their best to meet your expectations. Good luck!

I would go above middle. Close to the max but a little under and see what they say. Better to start negotiating at a high point.
I think that tactic is smart too.
