For what it’s worth I don’t subscribe to the “ first to name a number looses.” For years I open with it in the screener myself. “What’s your budget for this role? I don’t want us to waste each other’s time”
80% of the time they deflect to me and ask what I’m looking for. At that point my response depends on my mood. If I’m annoyed I’ll actually call them out, “okay well I feel like my question was pretty straightforward so if it’s a challenge to answer we should just move on.” At that point I won’t entertain the discussion even if they their a number at me. If I’m in a good mood or just really keen on the role then I’ll candidly tell them my all-in comp expectation including benefits and make sure they know I’m down to discuss as long as we aren’t wasting time.
I gave up trying to get the best offer out of employers a long time ago. Now I know what I’m worth and if I find out later I could have made more it really doesn’t bother me because I got what I asked for
Yeah that happens for sure. It’s only when you respond back with a higher number a few times do they happen to “find it in their budget”.
Unless you’re asking for a ridiculous amount and are keeping it within the market range, you should be good, in theory.
TLDR; Agencies are cheap asses.
Ah gotcha.

I think they’re usually honest. If it feels low just say, “I’m excited about the opportunity but that number isn’t close to my market value. Let me know if you have space to go higher, I’d really love to continue talking.”
