Age? Any known fertility challenges? Goals for family planning?
Depending on those answers, it may make sense to explore doing one round if you think you’re mentally, physically, and financially able. Can also ask about financing options if you’re paying OOP.
We’re still holding off on IVF for now. It’s not just the cost, it’s the emotional weight too. We decided to take a break and focus on feeling like us again before making such a big decision. It’s hard not to feel the pressure of time, but we needed space to breathe.
Ivf is a lot mentally to tackle but much higher success rate. I don’t know of many people who have success with IUI which is also a lot to go through emotionally and financially cycle after cycle. We jumped into ivf and genetic testing as a means to expedite the painful process that is infertility. There are no guarantees in any of this but peace of mind knowing you’re doing everything in your power to be in a position with the highest chance of success ❤️
That’s a really tough call and also really depends on what your underlying fertility issue may be. While IVF can definitely help improve your odds, it’s also not a silver bullet.
We got naturally pregnant 8 years ago and now have a 7 year old, and despite not using any bc, never got pregnant again. We were getting a little older and decided it was now or never because we never wanted to have an only child. Coincidentally, we happened to find out that my husband’s union quietly added fertility coverage through progyny and buried it in the insurance pamphlet. We were ready to try it and pay for it, but got lucky.
Have you been to a fertility doc / had the testing that may show what issue you’re having?
We had a pretty specific issue that came out in the ovary/tube/ink test, that made it clear that IUI or other options weren’t going to work so we were encouraged to go straight to IVF.
I'd consider ways to improve your fertility coverage whether that be switching jobs or moving to a state with mandated coverage in the marketplace (switching to state insurance might be pricier for the year of ivf).
If the financial consideration is significant, Think of it as a salary bump of 20-40k by switching jobs.
I wish I went to ivf sooner the low tech options caused much more pain and suffering rather than Ivf which yielded a positive in 3 cycles over 6 months including egg retrieval. Vs the years we suffered trying other options.
You or your spouse could switch jobs for one that has coverage or you could inquire with smaller clinics about how to pay out of pocket / adjusted rates (I know my clinic offered all kind of assistance for those paying out of pocket). There is discount pharmacies for medication. My clinic has a give back program where you can donate unused medications.
Good luck.
