I'm in Canada and the only way I would take something with lower pay is if the job also offered a pension (hard to find these days!)

I wonder if it’s different in Canada but yes it’s so hard to find job that offers pension. That’s the thing in the past now. Which is sad and annoying. My mother just received her pension and she’s loving it.
I never really cared about the benefits when I was younger. Things like healthcare, dental, and 401(k) didn't really matter that much when I was in my 20s. Now I'm a dad with a chronically ill wife and I really need good healthcare and retirement benefits. When it comes to good benefits versus pay, you could always negotiate for better pay.

Same here. I didn’t care to have benefits when I was in my 20s but now that I am older I think it’s so important to have good benefits. You never know what can happen to you or a loved one.
I personally have found most benefit packages to be similar in customer service. This differs from family, one of whom in her industry, her job pays 100% of the health insurance cost (not the copays and such, but she doesn’t pay a dime to have the insurance). So for me, it’s about base pay. As long they offer insurance (health, dental, etc) anything else like a 401k matching is extra to me. Because what good is 3% vs 5% matching if I can’t even pay my bills?
They both matter. A good benefits package can make up for a pretty significant piece of salary. I try to look at how much the benefits will likely save me per year, and whether or not that makes up for the decreased base pay.

Yes, I believe they both matter and both are equally important to look at when considering a new job. I’m going to start doing what you suggested. I also calculate if the benefits out weight the pay and that’s how I will know.
