If I’m busy, I get it to them before midnight on Monday. If they wanted to review at a specific time on Monday, they would have given me a more specific deadline. How else am I suppose to prioritize the last minute Friday requests, which are all for Monday?

When I tell people this I mean anytime Monday. If I need something sooner, I’d preface it with first thing Monday morning or COB Monday. Everyone knows I’ll consider them late if I don’t get something by the time I specified. A lot of times people who set deadlines aren’t clear—which is annoying. I always am clear about stuff like this, and people know that. To me that is very important.

If I say “by Monday” that means I want to put eyes on it before I log off on Monday. I would generally expect to get it by lunch, mid-afternoon at the absolute latest. I’m going to be pissed if I receive this after 5pm without a heads up earlier in the day on the late ETA. It’s a ripple effect when the person at the bottom of the totem pole doesn’t do what they are supposed to when they are supposed to do it!

We are lawyers. "By Monday" means "By Monday". So long as that assignment is stamped Monday when it arrives, it is on time and the senior should not complain.
If you intend a specific time, that should be set out in the request. Generally speaking I don't think firm associates will blow an explicit deadline set out in the request absent special circs.
I might treat client requests differently though depending on the context, since I don't expect them to be so precise with words.

Quite honestly, can you just ask when they want it? I would say “by Monday” means anytime on Monday (probably during their normal work hours because if you send it at 11:30 at night, they might be done for the day so they won’t see it until Tuesday, so for them, it’s arrived on Tuesday). But rather than stress, I would probably ask when they need it, OR if I know I have a lot going on, I’ll sort of tell/ask, as in, “based on my workload I believe I will be done with it by 1 pm, or do you need it earlier?”
