When you tell the recruiter at A that you got an offer at B and want to know the status of next steps, what happens behind the scenes?

Completed all the interviews and had positive feedback but before the offer I spoke with the recruiter (third party) and asked them if I can get to a certain compensation number as I might have couple other offers around that number but they got back saying the firm has decided to move on as they cannot match it. What can I do now? Still interested in the role.

“I will get back to you by the end of this week” does that really mean “your not right for this position”? Because this whole thing is a waste of time. Do you ever feel like there are rooms you’re locked out of? I’m a black woman, i lateraled to my group a few months ago with minimal onboarding and welcome.
