The internship mattered less than I expected. What actually helped was having a project I could talk about in concrete terms. Translating research into parsable language is a whole skill, and most people coming out of academia haven't practiced or mastered it.
Real-world experience is a tipping point in your favor. A lot of graduates have the same qualifications. It’s the internship or side project that gives you the edge. I would say my internship helped my transition and also gave me a lot of great connections.

For me it was getting out at the right time
I saw I didn’t want to teach so I jumped ship at a masters and haven’t looked back
