Coach
You’re not imagining it — cold outreach to hiring managers is brutal. The times I’ve seen it work, the message was very short and very specific: one sentence on why this role, one sentence on what problem you’ve solved that looks similar, then a soft ask. No resume dump. Even then, a lot still disappears into the void.
I've tried and I got just few replies!
The only times it’s worked for me were when I: 1) kept it short, 2) mentioned something specific about their work or team, and 3) attached a very relevant piece (portfolio link, mini case study). Generic “checking in on my application” messages have always died on read for me.
It works best when the message is specific and short. Mention the exact role, why your experience fits, and one or two relevant wins. Generic “open to opportunities” messages rarely get replies, but targeted ones sometimes do.
