Who here works in a law firm and has unlimited PTO? Do you like having unlimited/do you feel like you are actually able to take advantage of this benefit? Or do you feel like you’d be better off if you had set PTO? Not interested in hearing from in-house since you don’t have billable hours.

Unlimited PTO, but I think it works because we do not have a minimum billable hour requirement, it’s chill af

Mentality is we are litigators, and when a case requires, we’ll work insane hours, so it all evens out in the end. That being said, we aren’t making Cravath either, work/life balance does come at a cost.

At least 20. Unlimited PTO is great for wanting to take random days off during the week or for family events.

Dumb and lies. You're still expected to crank out your 160 a month. If you want that week vacation, you're going to have to cram those 40 extra hours into the other three weeks of the month. Good luck.

Unlimited PTO as long as you make your billables for the year you can do what you want

Depends on firm and management. I have unlimited PTO and as long as all deadlines are met, I legit can give a 24 hour notice that I’m leaving for a week.

like

The only reason they have unlimited PTO is that no set number of days accrue so they don’t have to pay out vacation days when you leave.

like

My hours requirement dictates how many days per year I work. Given that, I prefer unlimited PTO, so I have one less thing to think about. It’s also one less metric to be scrutinized on.

like

I do not have unlimited PTO. In fact, I have to use some of my PTO before a certain time or I'll loose it.

like

I much prefer unlimited because we are treated as professional adults instead of pleebs who punch a clock.

Unlimited doesn’t always work, though, in firms where more WLB is expected and/or you don’t have as dedicated lawyers, so some people will take advantage.

I’ve never counted on getting a payout when I leave a firm and it certainly wouldn’t move the needle for me when choosing a firm. The firm I’m with now accrues time but it doesn’t roll over, so you use it or lose it. Worst of both worlds.

The opposite end of the spectrum are government workers who sometimes part service with hundreds of hours of unused PTO or sick time which is a terribly inefficient system as well.

like

that's why you just use every last hour of pto

Very much depends on the firm and how it is managed. I’ve always liked it where I have been.

Unlimited PTO is usually not really unlimited. Test the theory by working a couple of 30 hour weeks and see for yourself. One important distinction: upon separation from the employer, my understanding is that they have to pay out your accrued PTO, but not unlimited. So in that way, unlimited PTO has less value, except as a shiny recruiting object. Unless the two 30 hour work weeks go great?

At least at the junior/mid level plenty of associates can do 30 hour weeks and not get disciplined for quite a while

I need a payable or a way to get paid, if you knew about the need for ability to do so, but why did it not work the first time o really needed it and still need it, this is new way of pay to me, I thought check,

I don’t think it would make any real difference whether we had 4 weeks, or whatever it was, as opposed to unlimited. I have had both at various times in my career. Either way, you will have the same pressures to not take “excessive” vacation and those would have qualitative impacts on anyone who tried to take much more in the form of reviews not being as good (which likely would play into one’s bonus) or getting pushed out or fired after a while. There also are games people play with not taking vacation, per se, but being on a vacation. I have done this myself when I still am billing on the trip.. It’s more complex and nuanced than that, but these are the general principles backing my first sentence. Many say the real reason for unlimited PTO is not having to add up one’s unused PTO and pay them for it upon exit.

We have it and I typically take 2 weeks off a year, and then maybe a few extra days around the holidays. It’s not the unlimited pto that is the problem, it’s the minimum billable hours requirement. I can’t really take off more than that and meet my hours if I want to work manageable hours in any given week
