And then the hardos will comment and say “they pay you for your availability” but then don’t realize that for the hours we work, it’s really not that much to justify ruining our vacations
If that were true, you'd own equity. That is Business 101 stuff and attorneys are notorious for being clueless about business operations.
Working in law is worse than if you were working as an operating room physician. You are on call 24/7 until the day you die or you are disbarred 😬. The reason is because time is money, and every second you work, you are creating revenue. On the other hand, every second you are not working, you are causing/creating an expenditure. If you keep your client happy, then you can hope to have continued business with them in the future, along with potentially lucrative referrals. This is obvious to you I know, but in their endeavors to impress and grow, they are causing their attorneys to burn out. If it’s a decent size firm, they should have capable paralegals, legal secretaries, and other attorneys that can assist while you are away. The only way to avoid this is to have it clearly stated in your employment contract that your PTO days are just that “time off” of work. They may frown on you not taking your calls or answering emails on vacay, but what can they do? Labor laws apply to those working in the judicial system as well. Send a courtesy email a week prior to your departure telling your clients that you will be away, with a list of people and numbers to call when you’re gone. Followed by one the day before. You can decide whether or not anything needs to be addressed while you are away. If your firm doesn’t respect personal boundaries, then maybe you need a different crew. They clearly don’t care about your mental health and wellbeing. Weigh out your pros and cons
Not if you run the show or do things YOUR way. I started my career as a partner in a company and I most certainly was NEVER "on call." I perhaps think very differently and wouldn't deny it but I say if you want me to act like an owner, you'll give me ownership interest or realize that employees DO NOT view YOUR business as THEIR "baby." I made it clear to any client I had when I worked in the only firm I ever worked in exactly when I was and wasn't available, left everything very clear before I ever took days off or did anything to where nobody had ANY reason to bother me (no one ever did, either). Like Dave Chappelle said that time, I will not be summoned. This profession could easily fix its work-life balance issues but stodgy, stubborn, negative, spoiled brats REFUSE to solve their own problems then want to whine when people refuse to be treated like robots.

Always vacation in places you’re hard to reach—a very different time zone, a cruise ships, etc—and be up front about the fact that you’ll be out of pocket. I check my email like once a day on vacation max.
Yes! I do this too.
I set an away message and direct them to my paralegal who will text me if it’s urgent. Boundaries are necessary.
Alot of good advice in this thread. I would only add that during my time as a new associate, you have to work alot harder to establish your worth and being “available” and “responsive” is up there with the quality of your work. As you develop your own clients, or move in house, your work ethics are driven more by your relationships. You need to disconnect (we all do) but things inevitably come up and your client may not understand if they need immediate response. Simply keeping your cell phone on or monitoring emails for something that can’t wait should be a personal preference to offer peace of mind. I am solo in house so I tend to be available whenever but don’t let that ruin my R&R. I do go offline, camping once a year with no service but I provide sufficient notice and have a back up (outside counsel or superior).
Love this! This is sound advice with a lot of practical value. When you are new, you are absolutely correct, you have to prove your worth. As you build relationships and trust within your firm, you will learn who can handle things in your absence. I don’t know about other paralegals, but I knew the cases just as well as my boss. I wrote up the motions, and the writs, etc. As well as opening and closing statements. Point being, you can minimize your work responsibilities on vacation, by being organized and having support. Having a highly skilled, experienced team is vital.
I bought a satellite phone and went to a place without cell reception or internet. I was technically available, but it was such a PIA no one really bothered.
I can back to 1900 emails once. I now do it for me.

😳😳 I think I would quit on the spot lmao
I’m very lucky that our firm has a very supportive environment, so when one of us is out of town, we usually meet with our paralegal and associates to ensure that everyone knows exactly what they can do to step in if I am not available. That being said, depending on your area of practice there are some emergency motions that occur, which is why it is so critical to stay up to date on your notices of unavailability. I have learned the more communicative and collaborative you can be with your team ahead of time, the more they can step in and communicate if things arise, so that you can enjoy your time. And obviously, this goes both ways, and I do the same for them when they are out.
It’s much better now than it used to be.
