Glassdoor for my company says that Senior SWE’s make about 160k in TC, a mix of 140k and about 20k bonuses/stock.
The true $ is towards 350k TC which is more accurately shown on sites like Levels.fyi. Glassdoor also has had a problem where the mobile app shows different salaries and bonuses than the ones shown on the website (browser). GD is a mess of inaccuracy.
Why does the mobile app show that an X position at company Y make 120k but when you see that same company and position on the website it’s 80k? Why do they pull numbers from two different databases? Which one is the one that got corrupted? At this point, who knows. You can go test it right now. Just compare a few different companies’ numbers. Some are similar, some are only 10-20k off, and some are crazy with differences of 100k.
It uses salary information that is reported to it. It also might have your location data to show you a COL adjusted amount on mobile or the browser resulting in the discrepancy. Or it is as you say. People also may misreport salary information so even if it works as intended, it may not be reliable.
Yes you can google and use Glassdoor but it’s also very important to understand weather or not your company and your manager is current on what the industry and market standard is. Say you’ve done your research and it tells you 75,000 a year but your being told anything over 60,000 is a stretch and you should be ecstatic with 65,000. You now know there’s no significant raise in the future and your not being valued on a current pay scale.
Have you considered cost of living adjustments? Or years of experience? Or educational background or special licenses? These details typically get overlooked in a typical Fishbowl salary discussion.
Glassdoor works well with certain companies or industries. I would research more than one site though.
Also, sites like Glassdoor only have results from those who participate in the surveys which is to say any results would not include the total market for your area. I use salary.com which is a little better but it's best for employers to pay for a comprehensive compensation survey based on duties instead of titles. Hope this helps!
Glassdoor salaries are 💩
Because it’s easier to type a sentence and hope for the best vs doing detailed research. Glassdoor has always been pretty accurate — more accurate than asking strangers who are guessing.
Thousands of strangers posting their own salaries creates data. Strangers guessing random individual salaries for jobs they aren’t working themselves is an almost meaningless exercise not rooted in fact.
It's more realistic to gain insight from others because recruiters often say "market rate" but use only one source. The range from these sites is large enough to where even the lower end of the spectrum is not "market rate," and someone using one source alone can easily under-negotiate.
