Why do production companies always lowball editor rates?

One production company admitted to me they were lowballing most of their production bids in general to win the jobs. So when they bundled post that was getting lowballed along with everything else. Not sure if that helps explain it 🤷🏻‍♀️. This might be a good question for the production bowl.

In my experience direct work for agencies is the only thing that consistently pays rates. When I get requests from prod cos, I’m always like… guys.

Mostly ego and lack of knowing how to collaborate with others. The biggest directors I’ve worked with don’t have time to fret about the edit, they’re already on to the next one.

If the job has good potential, we’ll usually do a cut together to present to the agency. Then after the agency and client muck it up with “design by committee” feedback, we finish that first cut.

If the director has time to spend in the bay, that director is hard up for work and really depending on this project for their next.

Debating between two offers, $105k at Deloitte or $120k at Guidehouse. Is GH worth the extra $$$ or should I go with the brand recognition of D? Both offers have already gone through negotiations.

I would also appreciate info regarding progression raises at D and GH.

Fellow editors, I’m leaving somewhere where I’ve been in-house for 5 years, and was in-house 2 other place before that. I’m realizing that while I’m excellent at my craft, I’m not an excellent freelancer. Any advice for someone striking out on their own (and not in LA/NY)?

How much does a post house typically charge an advertising client for editing in NYC? Whether that’s hourly, daily, etc.

Does anyone include a bit on invoices like "Accounts not paid within terms are subject to a .75% monthly (9% annual) finance charge" or something like that?

Tangentially, has anyone had an invoice with 30-day terms kicked back for revisions because the client's terms are longer, or do they just ignore what you've stipulated?

Do you start charging OT after 8 hours or 10 hours? Does it seem like there’s a standard? (I’m in NY but interested to know about any place)
