Why do recruiters ask for salary expectations before sharing the budget? I gave a number aligned with my last role at 165k and now I am worried I anchored too high. The role fits my experience perfectly and I do not want to price myself out. How do you handle this question strategically?

Are you willing to take a pay cut for your next move? If you are, you could give them a range. If you aren't, then I wouldn't worry about it. You've just saved yourself some time and stress.

Have a range that you are confident in. What is reasonable to get paid and what you want to make. If you are doing the research, you won’t be pricing yourself out, just missing an opportunity to get paid the least possible.

I always dislike it when they ask for a number first, because it feels like they’re trying to lock you into a figure that could be much lower than their budget. I usually avoid giving a number and instead ask them for the range for the role. If they won’t provide a range, I aim higher than I normally would to avoid lowballing myself.

I have an offer for $130k for a senior attorney position in a boutique L&E firm. Also have a recruiter who thinks she can get me into another for $150-170k. Any tips for countering the $130k offer for more using the other potential offer while not risking a complete withdrawal of the current offer?
