Are you willing to take a pay cut for your next move? If you are, you could give them a range. If you aren't, then I wouldn't worry about it. You've just saved yourself some time and stress.
Have a range that you are confident in. What is reasonable to get paid and what you want to make. If you are doing the research, you won’t be pricing yourself out, just missing an opportunity to get paid the least possible.
I always dislike it when they ask for a number first, because it feels like they’re trying to lock you into a figure that could be much lower than their budget. I usually avoid giving a number and instead ask them for the range for the role. If they won’t provide a range, I aim higher than I normally would to avoid lowballing myself.
