Americans believe in the myth of a meritocracy. Unless you are self-made, being called rich implies you did not get your status because of your merit, but because of your riches.
The term "self-made" really is used very loosely here. The worst part is that they probably believe it too.
Because most “rich” people have grown up in a bubble of relative wealth and don’t realize how rich they are compared to most other people. They think of “rich” as multi-millionaire living in a mansion
The definition of rich makes a big difference here. When I hear the word I think more of a social status rather than a status based on wealth. I wouldn't consider any self made person rich, but rather wealthy. To me rich is you never had to work and all you ever do is play squash/polo and maybe pop in to the office of the family business every 6 months for a board meeting. More of a social class regardless of how much money you actually have
