Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

To feel you out. If they’re budgeted at $125k and you say your currently salary is $95k, they offer you $110k and come in under budget. If you say $150k then they are probably not going to invest any more time, as you are out of their budget.

Just wondering how they get to that number. But I guess that’s not exactly what I need to know.
Yeah it's always going to be about maintaining their sense of power at the negotiating table. If your salary is at the lower range of what their budget is, they'll try to keep their offer lower too

I can see that happening. Anything to benefit the company more.
Probably a mix of all the above, although for me, it has been a while since I was asked my current salary. Would like to stick to the range for the new role instead.

Thank you
Or they don't know what the role pays? Or if you think they do know, to test your integrity?

That’s an interesting perspective. Thanks
I think a mix of all of the above, especially habit
Honesty doesn’t pay here
All of the above. That’s why it’s best not to share your current salary unless you lie about it
They ask to make a decision if they can afford you and decide what to offer if they can. Some managers will offer what they pay the rest of their team for similar job to be fair while others will try to squeeze out the most. I ask for their ranges to decide if I am interested as well. You can always answer with I am looking for X to X$ and follow up what is your budget, once they answer ask for the bonus structure and any other incentives as you are looking at total package not just base. If they push on that then maybe they are not a place you want to be at
