Why is it so hard to get a job as a phlebotomist in your 50s? Most jobs say with experience or if you just finished school. Well, I do have experience. But because it had been sometime, I did take the course again. So now I have the experience and just finishing school. I can’t seem to get in any place I apply at. I don’t understand.

I have received an email after my interview with HCL from consultant stating I have selected for HCL technologies and asking for information like, when U was interviewed and whether I received any link for documents upload from HCL.
I replied to that email saying interview has been done and I am yet to receive any link from HCL for documents upload nor any call from HCL HR.

Well, I am a phlebotomist who has been looking for a job for almost a year now. I don’t know where you’re located, but I sure do wish I could be there because all they keep asking or looking for over here in Chicago is experience. I’ve been turned down left and right. this coming Wednesday, I have an interview I’m hoping I get it because I desperately need it and I don’t have anybody in my corner due to me being new to the state
In PA, there are plenty of jobs for you all!!
Many health centers prefer a candidate that is not so niche like medical assistants that offer a wider range of skills including phlebotomy. In my experience, phlebotomist don’t leave their roles until retirement. I’m not sure where you are from, but mobile phlebotomists are usually in demand - maybe go down that route. Additionally, I’m not sure how salary/experience is considered in roles like this because there is usually a cap. I use to be a phlebotomist and medical assistant many years ago, and career paths were very limited.
I hit my ceiling a long time ago!
Most places dont want to pay for experience. As a past teacher for phlebotomy ive seen companys run though students like no tomorrow. Example quest labcorp and a couple of cash labs. Try a hospital though they are better at keeping phlebotomist.
I know if you lived in my State, you would find a job, NO problem! Might not be 1st shift, but you will definitely get a job!
Doesn't anyone wonder if it's because of the laps of time between her working & then not working? I doubt that, Especially since you took the course ALL over again!! So I didn't think that's it at all!
How would one explain the amount of time (say 5-6 years) where one didn't work on an interview & moving forward? When wanting to going back to work?
People take time off from work. Woman who are raising a family for example. I don't think it's uncommon.
My opinion, companies are willing to take huge financial risk on inexperience candidate. Help me understand, so the “Revolving Door”expenses are more cost-effective than giving a few dollars more to a candidate with 5-10+ yrs experience that most likely willing to stay employed with the company 10+ more years? Make it make sense. The youth have the opportunity to job-hop until they find what fits for them. Social Media is the gateway to a company's approval ratings. We see you.
Did you try Red Cross?
Hi Patty,
Try reaching out to your college/ school to see if they have a careers services department. If they do, they should be able to assist you with finding a job. Ask if they officer externship services as well.
If they do not offer any of these services, reach out to your local Workforce/ Unemployment office. They usually offer multiple career services for free, including resume assistance, job fairs and are often a direct recruiter for different entities.
If that does not work, try your local nursing homes, blood bank etc.
Best of luck.
Try applying with Quest Diagnostics. They pay for experience AND you can be placed in a doctor's office where they want minimum of 2 years experience because you work alone and don't need someone to help you with missed draws, etc. I am a phlebotomist with 30 years experience working as a practice manager, but can tell you that one of my offices needed a phlebotomist (Quest) and because of the nature of it, we cannot have someone placed in our office inexperienced. We just got a 60 year old phlebotomist who replaced a 40 year old that rotated out. We had a choice and told Quest that we did not want anyone young, immature, and inexperienced.
Hope that helps!
Phlebotomists are being taken to the woodshed just like everybody else in healthcare who isn't upper management. Even some of the middle management is leaving because of poor conditions. I would think hiring a person who's less likely to leave in a year would be more beneficial. It costs money to put people through the hiring process.
It's not clear from your comment if you're getting interviews and then being rejected, or if you're submitting resumes and not getting interviews in the first place. If you're not even getting interviews, we can't say it's age discrimination per se without knowing more, but we may never know, of course. And even if you're rejected at the interview level, we still don't know in the end.
Sadly, age discrimination is a reality, and those of us who are older have to leverage our life experience, skill, knowledge, and career history to our advantage.
If you're applying and not even getting interviews, take your job search to the next level by not simply applying for jobs; rather, go out of your way to get in touch with hiring managers and other leaders at organizations where you'd like to work, and ask for what's called an informational interview. Sit down with them for 15 or 20 minutes, tell them about yourself, demonstrate that you've done your research and understand the organization, ask them what their needs are, and also ask what they're looking for in their ideal candidate. These types of conversations can sometimes help you to find an ally within the organization who will be willing to help you get hired.
I'm turning 60 this year, and I was lucky to be hired a few months ago for a job that I really like. I do think about my age and how it may get harder to find work as I get older, but I try to use my experience to my advantage.
