Why is San Bernardino a bad area? Twice in the last week I've heard of folks discounting living in San Bernardino. And commute wasn't the only reason. Not from the area so would love to hear thoughts from those familiar with it all

I have lived in SB for 40 years. There are nice areas even in SB city. Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear have a lot of outdoor activities. Redlands is nice. Cooler up here than LA. No one has AC but we dop get snow.

It's true that there are both mountain areas and desert areas in SB county, but they're not one in the same. Both Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead are mountain cities. They're not in the high desert. The high desert are cities like Victorville and Hesperia. The high desert is higher elevation than the coast, but not nearly mountain high elevation.

I grew up there and my parents still live there. It’s so depressing. It’s dangerous. I had my first friend die in a drive by when I was in third grade. I’m pretty sure it’s still the same. The schools are terrible. It is even more of a desert than LA and the heat is unbearable. There are few jobs that pay enough to have a nice life. Most people work in warehouses. It’s a food desert. Forget about the healthy / vegan options like in LA. The traffic in San Bernardino is terrible and commuting anywhere worthwhile is terrible. If you have to live in the area I suggest Redlands as it is safer and has a cute downtown. Why would you be interested in living there?

San Bernadino is the Kentucky of California. Go for the meth, stay because you sold your car for meth.

Ghetto / kinda dangerous

I grew up in San Bernardino county and there is literally nothing to do and it’s so ghetto.

I don’t want to do that in 100 degree weather all the time. I did not enjoy abundant meth use.

Because you have to say no just to pronounce the city's name...

If you love MAGA rallies, big trucks with “Let’s Go Brandon” stickers, Alex Jones, and Confederate flags, San Bernadino County/Central Valley might be for you.

funnylikesmart

It's one of those areas that most people just "grow up" in versus actually move to as a young professional. You wouldn't have too much to do out there tbh

It’s called San Bernaghetto for a reason

Reading the comments here is hilarious. I live in San Bernardino county and enjoy it. Most of my family is out this way which makes it much easier to help with kids. San B city is a dumpster fire that you avoid. There are pockets across all the neighboring cities that are really nice.

So if you’re looking at SB city, which that map shows right away as red AF then yea it’s sketchy. But the spots listed in the thread Are all solid areas to live. I would stick close to the 210 freeway and look from la Verne east to Fontana. Happy to DM about locations and things to do as well. Been here for 30 years.

What area are you from, maybe we can find something analogous.

funny

In short, its far from everything and doesn't add much for being so far. You would hope for some better school/ family components since it's not offering much and it doesn't even have that.

Just to be clear, are you talking about the city itself or the county?

like

OP — Both, but the city even more.

likehelpful

There's bad areas around the city that's hurt its reputation. There's also some decent areas too. But it's pretty far from LA and the beach. People hate that aspect of the Inland Empire in general.

Seems like others covered most already, but, in my opinion, San Bernardino County (SBC) doesn’t offer much to do outside of work. I currently live in the county (not city) and always find myself in LA.

SBC offers a different life. Most of the people I know live out there bc they get more for their dollar. Bigger house with a ranch and livestock. They also will buy a boat and some dirt bikes/quads/sand rails. Nobody bothers them, they just do as they please.

city and county are two different places. I believe city is still bankrupt

I ride there from Venice Beach specifically to drink and party with my SB based friends at the Screaming Chicken (now renamed Screaming Sallys (sic)). I love it. However, I should caveat this with the fact that it fits with my lifestyle, which is not what one might call ‘family friendly’.
