Why was there criticism around Bezos flight to space?

A lot of people are not future thinking and don't realize the value of having a place (space) that requires highly technical skills and resources to navigate that is populated by people from wildly different backgrounds and countries. This will over time (hopefully) result in a unification of people, resources, governmental agencies, that will (hopefully) lead to peace, as this motivates the thought process to think more globally, and less nationally/locally, which is clearly not working for us as a species.

The nice thing is that in this case, business interests and society interests align and there is positive net gain for humanity as a result of this new business. What seems like an inefficient use of resources now is really just because the technology is new, but the long term gains of being able to mine asteroids for resources will make it all worth it. New business is just a stepping stone to develop future technologies and businesses

Its a lot of money to spend when there are so many issues on earth. Can't be great for the planet, either.

You’re talking to me about buzz words? Hilarious. What does Jeff Bezos have to do with healthcare for the less fortunate? You’re not answering the question. Is there supposed to be a cap at how successful we are and then the government interferes? Why does he need to worry about the well being of society just because he happens to have a ton of money? What have you done to contribute?

likefunny

Space exploration is vital for the advancement of science.

Billionaires conducting a race to space is for their own egos and won’t do much for said advancements.

like

The same could be said Europe was launching ships to the New World. You think it was a much of poor schmucks financing those trips?

Because he doesn’t deserve to be spending this money if he is not able to pay his employers proper wages.

likefunny

You’re not enjoying the recent inflation enough, A2? You want a lot more of it? Bezos building spaceships isn’t driving housing prices up. If people make more, the demand for goods like cars, housing, food, etc increases, as we’ve seen lately, and purchasing power remains relatively unchanged despite the increase in wages. Amazon (and other employers) pay the market-clearing wage. If there are enough people willing to work for that (I.e., don’t have opportunities to make more elsewhere), there’s no need to raise pay. If people aren’t willing to work for it, employers have to keep increasing pay until supply and demand are in equilibrium.

Also note that equilibrium doesn’t mean the same number of employees they have/want now. As the price of a good (labor) rises, companies want less of it. Automation become relatively less expensive. They’ll shut down certain hours previously-marginally-profitable that they were open when labor costs were lower, etc. Australia, where wages are substantially higher, is a good example of this. All ordering at McDonald and other fast food outlets has been at a kiosk for many years, with no human labor taking orders. Stores close at 6 pm except one night per week. And you’ve got higher prices too: cost of living is 11.6% higher, on average, than in the US — e.g., a McDonald’s value meal in AU is ~US$9. And many restaurants used to add a ~25% fee on Saturdays, a 50% fee on Sundays, and a 100% fee on holidays to cover compulsory penalty rates.

Because he’s spending money he “earned” by having his employees work as almost literal slaves. Being rich through entrepreneurship is fine but not at the expense of thousands of people that can’t even make ends meet. We’re basically regressing to feudalism.

Its surprising how many people believe in the popular opinion spewed by the media and don't do enough DD on their own. I expected better from folks here lol

This is not an original thought, but hopefully gives a good analogy- imagine where we would be if people didn't risk their lives and money on innumerable explorations using ships. You would not have globalization and the world would probably be a hundred years behind. Similarly space exploration and attention to the area can propel society by pervasive to internet access, infinite applications of smallsats in agriculture, travel etc

A2 - he literally made his company minimum wage $15/hour before the federal government, and most state governments were able to do so. Not sure what you’re talking about.

Rich dudes fighting for space travel bragging rights - very middle school like where it’s a d*** length contest. Plus Bezos’ spacecraft is designed to look like a male organ, which is sad and funny at the same time!

funny

People are jealous of billionaires. And they're so wrapped up in populist thinking that the only thing worse to them than seeing legitimate businessmen like Bezos and Branson, who actually became rich off of value add ventures (unlike another "billionaire" who didn't do shit), is to see them use the next phase of their lives to push the limits of science. It's a capitalism success story. It's not government space flight. And that kills them inside.

funny

I’m all for progress/future, but each of those flights release carbon equivalent to a vehicle that runs for 200 years, so that’s not great to normalize.

1 car that runs for 200 year is very little CO2 emission lol

I don’t care about the money aspect; they earned it let them spend it.

My issue is that members on a board of directors are required to get annual physicals for resiliency purposes, meanwhile they will allow the face and brains behind a 300+ billion dollar company go into space?

Not unlikely
