It’s a well worn path to breaking into the upper income brackets, and it’s “more prestigious” than going into the trades
You don’t know what trades means lol pwc
Exit optionality
It happened in the 70s and it's because of McKinsey deciding to build a business by collecting smart people in a room. Eventually their success made consulting edge out iBanking for business school grads. This is all over now, consulting is a dead end career.
I honestly find it kind of crazy that I get paid $400k without any real skills. I just happen to be good at talking to people and explaining how processes work to clients. And I could 2-3x my income by building a “book of business” and delegating more work to junior folks. It can be stressful at times and I occasionally work 50-60 hour weeks, but otherwise I have pretty decent WLB as an MD. Consulting is kind of a cheat code if you know how to navigate it.

Less than it used to be, before the age of tech and PE hawtness
I think McKinsey made it prestigious. Somewhat exclusive. Known as the CEO factory. Decent pay
I agree that it has lost its luster
I find they avoid it. They want to go into investment banking or private equity now, even the tech-heads.
