This post is why Trump won and will win again. So disillusioned from 80% of the country
I hate that elitist opinions like these are so prevailing in consulting. Not everyone has economic mobility to move to a better career/life.
If I was born and stuck in those conditions then yes, I'd certainly reminisce about the times when it embodied the American dream.
Yeah, western PA is super stuck in the past with arguably one of the biggest robotics hotbeds, Uber’s autonomous vehicle testing grounds, Apple, Facebook and google offices, etc.
When will they finally let go of the steel-making glory days!
C2 - that is hands down the dumbest thing I have ever read. There are plumbers, mechanics, electricians all making way more than you, working for themselves, with an amazing work life balance.
I award you no points, and may god have mercy on your soul.
Gross over generalizations here. It’s actually disgusting.
First, I’m from Columbus and have never heard anyone talk about the “glory days.” My grandfather from my mothers side is from zanesville (as east as ohio goes) and retired from the then-ohio bell. My dad is from WV and is a very successful attorney. I’m sure there are pockets of small towns, but let’s be smart enough to recognize this is far from “all the fly over States.” I’m sure there is a similar mentality regarding farming across the US in certain areas.
Second, many people in the coal/mining/steal industry have been there for generations and either don’t know any other way or don’t have the means (education, money, family responsibilities) to leave and really struggle now that their skill sets have limited to no benefit to the family.
I never understood what was so great about working in a steel mill or in a coal mine with lousy conditions and a short lifespan
PWC1-I’ve lived in Ohio for three years and all these idiots talk about is bringing back the past. Well I got news for you.....THE PAST AINT COMING BACK! You can either move forward or sit around hoping the world stops for you. It’s not elitist to say the world moves on, in fact it’s just the opposite
I was born and raised in Cleveland and you’re greatly over-generalizing, OP. But hey, why let facts get in the way. You do you
Booz1 I am also a Pitt grad and my dad was a steelworker and I’m at Booz. Jagoffs is about right.
#CleanBeautifulCoal
OP you clearly haven’t been to Pittsburgh...one of the WORLDWIDE leaders in technology/AI/robotics, not to mention healthcare and education. But sure, go on making vast generalisations about which you’re clearly uneducated.
Don't forget about Indiana, Missouri, and... well any of the flyover states
Spoken like the bratty coastal trust fund kid you probably are.
You have no idea what is happening in the Midwest, what are stories are, or what our lives are like.
Pittsburgh ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Honestly, and I’m not saying this because of his unfortunate death the other day, but watch some of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown or No Reservations episodes from these cities. The Pittsburgh and, especially West Virginia, episodes are very recent and so incredibly good. Maybe it’ll give some of you a different viewpoint .
C2 your comments come from an ignorant place. People in the trades are scarce now due to retiring baby boomers. Owning your own business as an electrician or plumber can be highly lucrative. I would just take the L and move on here.
Yeah, they stop talking about that during the NBA playoffs.
What are you people talking about our government is run by people from the Midwest, Boehner = Ohio, Ryan = Wisconsin, McConnell = Kentucky, VP Pence = Indiana. Unless your talking specifically about Eastern Ohio and Western, PA...then that’s coal country and they are hard up so I understand why they live in the past.
What’s your problem C1?
C1 is mad his “clean, beautiful” coal job he was promised never materialized. Don’t worry C1, maybe you can work in the budding horse buggy industry, or the rotary phone plant down the street
