My base loc is Bengaluru, but currently I am not mandatorily required to work from office, and have been working from home since I joined Deloitte in July. Should I talk to my manager and go back to my hometown Kolkata and work from there? Staying in PG all day and working from here is not quite feasible for me. Suggest pls. Deloitte India

We’ll be rushing to go back to the clients as soon as they will have us in their buildings. There will be no “new normal”. Remote relationships are not as strong as in-person ones, so those in charge of selling (P/MD) don’t want to be remote. Plus there is an inherent risk of having to replace a cost that you pass down to clients (travel) with one that consultancies have to eat up (more real estate space if consultants don’t travel).

So long as you can show effective productivity WFH and continue to add value and complete your SOW, why would clients want or need to shake your germy hands?

And why would I want to shake theirs 🥳
In some sense does this challenge the empirical value prop of consulting? If not being onsite means the perceived value of your deliverables drops to the extent nobody is still buying, maybe clients will *rationalize* some spend away. Then firms will calibrate to a new normal, which may be empirically less bloated, or figure out a way to offer alternative services/pricing to make up lost ground.

Exactly! I think we’ve got to shift to a new normal - where we deliver higher quality, with lower costs involved.. because I’m sure that they know they can get everything out of us without having to spend for travel/food etc.. really curious to see how the face of consulting might alter..

I know in SCNO at least with implementations we have struggled with not being on site. Definitely a huge part of it.

I have but my project is an IT deal. Our on site teams doing implementations obviously work Better with access to the shop floor though.
I think the divide between tech consulting (aka leveraging offshore to deliver low cost but high margin work) vs strategy consulting will be interesting.
Honestly would do anything to not be on night calls but it’s the name of the game now unfortunately
Layoffs.
