We recently began homeschooling my oldest. There are many different offerings but that might now be the best alternative for you for a short term hiatus from school. If schools do shut down they should provide a curriculum to allow parents to keep their children on track. It may be best to broach this subject with your children’s school before they cancel classes.
One thing I would highly recommend is curating a list of YouTube Kids videos that your children can watch. If school is out and you are temporarily “homeschooling” you will find that it only take a fraction of the school day to actually cover the curriculum material. Assuming that you will have no childcare and will be WFH you will have a good amount of time to fill. Physical activities are great and personally preferred for the majority of the day. With that being said my children have learned amazing things from educational YouTube videos. And yes, there is an amazing array of very well produced educational videos. We also have Disney+ and we’ll let them choose anything from the National Geographic channel if they want to watch a movie. I know some will advocate for no screen time at all but in our modern age I think it’s somewhat silly not to take advantage of the amazing resources available. It just takes effort and time on the parent’s part to manage where a healthy line is.
Anyway, I don’t claim to have all of the answers but I do feel like our homeschooling journey has allowed me to explore some ideas and methods that others might find useful during these trying times.
Disney + is going to be a Godsend in the next few weeks. I'm looking at it as a preview for summer vacation, but without the plans.
