Coach
One of the things that makes program management role interesting, either PgM or TPgM, is the flexibility to create your own success path, specially at Google or FB. If you only focus on core (plans, tracking, escalations, etc) you will be checking the boxes but does get mundane over time as you pointed out (and will impact progression).
However, most success program managers, in my experience, leverage the platform to be the QB or the face of the team and drive cross functional initiatives including partnerships, BD, product direction and maturity of engineering processes. That’s the landscape very few other roles offer imo. The second path is less travelled as it is ambiguous, needs a lot of self starter mindset and involves maneuvering across orgs while not losing sight of your core deliverables.
I'm in PgM at a non-Big Tech tech company. I enjoy it! I lead the internal data analytics function for my company and I have a pretty wide latitude for how I want to do so, ranging from tactical day to day duties up to long term strategy for the unit. I work pretty closely with our tech and product teams as well as senior customers across pretty much all BUs in the organization. As a result, I've got a lot of visibility and have my finger on the pulse of the org in a way most other people don't.
