You say "ideally." Does that mean you don't have a role identified? I ask because the in-house experience you're describing I think is somewhat of a unicorn. Very few in-house gigs will pay that, PLUS let you be fully remote, PLUS rare work on nights or weekends. And, even if there are such roles, they're extremely competitive. All of that is to say, I think you might be glamorizing the in-house life a bit in relation to what's realistic and/or underestimating how hard it is to get one.

To confirm, even on reduced schedule I end up working nights, weekends and holidays unpredictably and that’s been hard over the course of many years. Pay is scaled at % of full time hours already, so my cash TC now is like $400k

I can’t imagine a gig better than your current one tbh
can I ask how you got this set up to begin with? am in a specialist transactional area and would prob be fine with a remote counsel gig

Same situation as OP, though I've been in a counsel role for a few years now (of my own volition). It started during COVID, then I had kids, and it's always been something that's important to me. The flexibility is golden, but you obviously have to prove your worth and be a valued asset to hold onto it. Candidly, I don't think the loss in salary that comes with going in house and possibility of having to give up remote work is worth it in my case.
My role is fully remote, although full time, and pays $750k/yr. Schedule is a lot better than it was as associate: 45-50 hours a week. Why not stay and go for counsel/nep?

I’ve been having a lot more health issues from the long hours and stress over the years. Wondering if in house would at least provide more hours stability. My current gig will be 20 hours one week and 85 the next, and that’s been hard on my health. I’d much rather work 40-50 hours a week every week, but that isn’t the norm in my practice area.

What practice area, and is the new role same area?

Not looking at M&A roles. Know a lot of people in house in securities with fantastic WLB and pay, so looking to transition to that.

go inhouse its a wild ride in it of itself

@OP I'd take lawyer 1's comment with a huge grain of salt. They have a comment history that suggests personal vendetta against biglaw. Also, for what it's worth, they're a contract lawyer... Most of those roles do not come sophisticated work or high title/pay (but granted pretty good wlb).
