How confident are u of getting the promotion? Google doesn’t look at the external titles as much, and typically slots you in based on your experience and performance during the interviews. Also, you would rather apply and get a foot in the door, then continue growing, rather than being stuck on levels. Irrespective of the level you join at, you will be promoted if you display the required skills.
OP - I didn't wait for my senior manager promotion given the current environment. I felt I had more control being in the system than leaving getting an opportunity again a year down the line. Just a perspective.
Thanks EY1- that makes lot of sense. On your question about promotion- yes, probability is high.
I would wait - get promoted and wait for headcount to improve at Google. You're pretty close to getting L6 in a year or two. So might as well get your promo and come in direct at L6 instead.
Think about your overall resume too. If you don’t plan on being at Google forever, it’s nice to have good titles on your resume. It may not matter as much in tech, but it shows a level of seniority and experience overall.
That said, if you’re ready to leave, don’t let the title hold you up.
